Warehouse Efficiency Can Increase Your Bottom Line

As businesses become accustomed to the daily strain of difficult trading conditions, it is more important than ever before that retailers, manufacturers and logistics companies are able to optimise their warehouse operations and increase warehouse efficiency.

Many businesses incur considerable variable costs on top of the already steep fixed costs of operating a warehouse, by choosing to operate via off-site storage facilities. Provided the warehouse is operating at full capacity, this makes sense. However, the number of businesses who are fully utilising their own warehouse to 100% of capacity is minimal. It may be possible to increase capacity of your existing on-site operation by as much as anywhere between 50-100%!

While it is important to maximise efficiency of the warehouse, there is also a danger of over-filling, and simply ensuring that all racking or storage systems are filled to the brim at all times is not necessarily a sign of an efficient storage system. An over-full warehouse can damage service levels and prevent optimum turnover of goods in and out of the warehouse. It’s all about striking the perfect balance. We have identified some key points to look out for, as you contemplate spending unnecessary capital on outsourcing your storage requirements.

Talk is Cheap

No really – talk IS cheap! Those employees working on the front line of your warehouse operation are the ones who know what’s best. They know what works and what doesn’t work. Even if the current service is smooth and thriving, talk to your warehouse operatives and see how they feel it can be improved. Getting decent feedback? Then have a trial of some of the new suggestions and see if they really will improve the performance of your business.

Clear Processes

Communication with warehouse operatives is again crucial in achieving ultimate performance levels. Discuss and make clear the required business processes. Formalise and document these processes to create a blueprint that all team members can work to. Highlight problem areas and identify quick fixes that will increase efficiency at no extra cost.

Take Your Warehouse to the Next Level

The easiest way of creating additional space is to go upwards. Much like the high-rise buildings in Japan where football matches are played atop 100 storey buildings – where space is tight on the ground, use the air.

Mezzanine floors and multi-level picking storage solutions offer an effective means of creating additional space. Could you add in an extra picking level? Are your shelf or beam levels maximising the storage capacity of your shelving or racking system? In many cases there is an opportunity to add additional picking levels and perhaps even double the picking capacity of the system.

Is your warehouse wall-to-wall, floor to ceiling racking? It’s unlikely. In which case there is no reason to assume that you can’t increase the efficiency and even capacity of your warehouse. With many warehouses built at a height of 10m, there is likely to be some upwards space that can be better utilised. It is these small tweaks and improvements that make all the difference when it comes to increasing the bottom line.

Increase Your Bottom Line Profits

How efficient is your warehouse operation? If you could create just 1 single additional pallet location, how many additional pallets per year is your operation now able to handle? Another 10? 100? 200? How much money does the business make for every pallet that comes in and out of your warehouse? All this depends on how fast moving your operation is, but please think about small tweaks to the warehouse operation that can considerably increase the efficiency, and therefore the bottom line profit of your business.
