Biggest and Best Breakfasts for Warehouse Workers

Full English Breakfast close up shotBreakfast is an important meal. You might remember your mum shouting at you as you ran out of the front door with a chocolate biscuit in your hand saying that’s not good enough.

Well, she was right. As she always was.

Providing the body and brain with fuel after an overnight fast you should eat a hearty meal within a couple of hours of waking. In fact, did you know that this is where the name comes from; breaking the fast?

So, in an attempt to help make all of you hardworking warehouse employees feel the benefits of a great start to the day, we’ve compiled some of the biggest and best breakfasts you should treat yourselves to on a regular basis.

Why Eat Breakfast?

We’re not going to lecture you, you're grown men and women at the end of the day. But upon researching we came across a few interesting facts we thought you should be aware of. Take a look below:

  • Improve Cognitive Function – Eating a good breakfast will restore glucose levels in the body that are essential for the brain to function. In turn this can improve your memory, concentration levels, and even make you happier.
  • Overall Healthier – People who skip breakfast are 4-5 times more likely to be obese than those who don’t. After eight or so hours of not eating, breakfast is the only way to jump start your metabolism allowing your body to start burning calories straight away.
  • More Energy & Sharper Focus – Eating a breakfast that is high in fibres and carbohydrates can help you feel less tired and more focused throughout the whole day.

The Full English

Centuries old, the Full English Breakfast is a national tradition. From crispy bacon to a perfectly runny yolk, it doesn’t really need much explanation; we all know the happiness it brings. But if you’re really up for a challenge take a look at this Man Vs Food inspired Fry up which offers up four times your daily calorie allowance.

No, you filthy lot that’s not what we meant – we’re talking about warehouse protection products and how they can keep you and your staff safe. Glad we’ve cleared that one up!

Stay safe

Undoubtedly your warehouse plays a big part in your life, the heart of your logistics business you might say. Whilst it can do a lot for you, not treated well the warehouse can become a dangerous environment. Instead you should ensure that it’s a relationship that can withstand the test of time.

So this Valentine’s Day show your warehouse some love, make certain it is well cared for, and ensure that it doesn’t upset any of your staff.

At Bristol Storage we stock everything you could possibly need to make sure your workplace is as safe as it can possibly be. In fact, here’s ten of the best safety accessories available in our Bristol Storage store.

Cable Protection

Before falling head over heels, make sure that none of your cables are trailing across walkways where they could be deemed a trip hazard. If cables have to run across areas where vehicles are operating, these cable ramps are perfect to ensure they aren’t damaged.

Aluminum stair tread

Don’t court danger. Make sure that if you have a mezzanine floor or other staircase, that the treads are marked clearly. These bold aluminum stair treads are hardwearing and quick and easy to install thanks to the non-slip tape on the back.

Floor markers

It will be love at first sight when you spot this great little mover. With this floor marking system, you can zone out areas or mark safety zones to your heart’s content. It comes with tape in six different colours and can be removed with no residue when you fancy a change.

Are you getting into the Christmas spirit at work?

Bring the Festivities to you WarehouseIt’s definitely not too early to mention the ‘C’ word now. With Christmas only a matter of weeks away, everywhere you look is a mass of reindeers, sparkly baubles and decorated trees. The shops are buzzing with everyone looking for the perfect socks for Uncle Jimmy or the novelty slippers that will have everyone in fits of laughter – at least until Boxing Day.

Christmas is a fantastic time. It’s great to have a break from work, spend time with friends and family and allow yourself a little bit of overindulgence. But in the run up to the big day, do you make an effort at work or is it just business as usual?

When everyone’s worked hard all year, it’s good to let your staff have a bit of fun and get into the spirit of things. It doesn’t have to be time consuming or costly, but if you inject a bit of the old Christmas magic into your warehouse, it might just reap rewards in terms of productivity and be a good morale boost for your team.

So, if you’re sat in a cold, plain warehouse wondering just how you can turn it into something resembling Santa’s grotto, here are our top tips:

Christmas jumper day

Why not kick off your festive season by setting a day when everyone can wear their special Christmas jumper? In fact you could take part in National Christmas Jumper Day on 18th December. Go into any high street store, or even charity shop, and you’ll find rails and rails of them. Whether you go for one with Santa stuck down the chimney, Rudolph with a light up nose or a snowman with his own fetching scarf, it’s a fun and easy way to get people of all ages and at all levels throughout your organisation involved. It will also give you a great photo opportunity.

Secret Santa

It’s always difficult to know whether you should buy a present for your workmates or boss and if so, how much you should spend. With Secret Santa, you agree on an amount - £5 is probably fine - then put everyone’s names into a hat. Then you just pull out a name (don’t tell anyone who you’ve got), buy them a funny or particularly apt present and place it wrapped under the tree. Then you can have fun opening the presents on the last day of work or at your Christmas party.

Christmas tunes

If you usually have music playing in the warehouse, get a seasonal playlist together so you can rock around the Christmas tree or sing along to a bit of Slade. There are even radio stations now completely dedicated to playing a whole array of Christmas songs from the 50’s right up to the present day – Smooth Christmas is a good one. And if this all gets a bit too jolly for some people, remind them that it’s only for a few more weeks and then you’ll get the AC/DC back on.

Deck the Halls of Your Warehouse This XmasDeck the halls

It’s great to have a tree at work – a real one is nice but the artificial one that’s been coming out of the box for the last twenty years will do the job perfectly well. If space is a problem, you can even make post it note trees stuck on a door or wall! Now that’s just genius.

Don’t be a control freak when it comes to decorating your tree. Get everybody involved and if you haven’t already got a stash of baubles, ask everyone to bring one in. It won’t be a sophisticated, colour themed tree but it will be a joint effort which is much more important.

You can decorate your warehouse without spending a fortune. If you have scrap paper lying around, it’s quick and easy to make a few paper chains when you have a quiet moment, or cut out some snowflakes to hang up. You’ll be surprised just how effective this looks. And of course, everyone loves a bit of tinsel.

Be sparkly but be safe

This might be a bit ‘bah humbug’ but don’t let your usual health and safety rules go out of the window, just because Father Christmas is coming down the chimney. Here are a few things you might want to think about before you embark on your winter wonderland:

  • Be careful when lifting a heavy tree and make sure it’s placed in a spot where it’s not obstructing walkways or exits. You’ll also need to make sure it’s fixed to a solid base and won’t topple over.
  • Don’t stand on tables, chairs or boxes to pin up decorations or to put the fairy on top of the tree. Use a step ladder and make sure someone else is around to hold it and prevent any slips or falls.
  • Make sure the decorations are at the right height and don’t obstruct your view of walkways or high traffic areas. Anyway, if everyone has to duck down to walk under your beautifully made paper chains, they’ll be torn down very soon! Also make sure they don’t hang anywhere near fans or heaters.
  • If you’re putting lights on your tree, make sure the plug is safe and has been tested. It’s also important not to overload plug sockets by using multi point extension leads or adapters. And crucially, make sure the wires are taped down or placed so they won’t cause a trip hazard.

Your Working Day Warehouse Soundtrack

Helmet and headphonesDo you like a bit of metal on the mezzanine, some folk on the forklift or a bit of punk between the pallets? Go into most warehouses these days and you’ll hear some form of background music playing.  It seems that employers have caught on to the fact that playing music while you work is a great way to create a more productive workforce. And for the workers, it definitely helps the day go more quickly.

You might be surprised to know that listening to music at work is not a new thing. In fact it’s played a big part in the workplace for centuries. As far back as the industrial age, woman and occasionally orchestras, were brought into the quieter factories to entertain the workers. Whilst in the Victorian times, weavers were known to sing together as they worked – though this may have been more about trying to stay awake through their hideously long shifts than for pure entertainment! Then in the 1940’s, the BBC launched a radio programme called ‘Music While You Work’. It went out twice a day and featured bands playing upbeat medleys to keep the factory workers happy.

Very quickly, the benefits of playing music at work became widely recognised. Not only did it increase productivity and boost team morale, it also improved alertness, which in turn led to fewer accidents.

It seems that it’s still incredibly relevant to the way we work today. In a recent study undertaken by an organisation called MusicWorks, some of the findings were quite staggering:

  • 88% of participants worked most accurately when listening to music.
  • 91% of managers/business owners agreed that playing music makes customers and staff happier.
  • 71% of employees would like to be able to listen to music at work.
  • 77% of managers/business owners agreed that allowing staff to listen to music enhances productivity.
  • 87% of office and factory business owners/managers say playing music improves morale.

If you’d like to see the full research findings, they’re available here.

In the Warehouse

Interestingly, it seems that warehouses and music go hand in hand. The legendary Chicago club called The Warehouse was the home of club promoter and DJ Frankie Knuckles. He opened the venue in 1977 and drew a huge following playing old disco classics mixed with the new Eurobeat pop. This is thought to have been the very first beginnings of house music. Compared to disco, house had a rawer feel and a deeper sound. It was designed to make people dance - and it did.

Our Warehouse Top 5

Ok pop-pickers, here’s a quick run down of our Top 5 warehouse tracks. Give them a listen and if you can think of any others that deserve to be on the list, don’t forget to let us know.

1)     Mezzanine by Massive Attack

Mezzanine is the third studio album by English trip hop group Massive Attack, released on 20 April 1998 by Virgin Records. It was the first album to be produced by Neil Davidge, along with the group. The entire album was provided on their website for legal download many months before the physical release was announced, one of the first major uses of the MP3 format by a commercial organisation. Mezzanine topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand, becoming the band's most commercially successful album to date.

2)     Little Boxes by Pete Seeger

Little Boxes is a song written and composed by Malvina Reynolds in 1962, which became a hit for her friend Pete Seeger in 1963. The song is a political satire about the development of suburbia, and associated conformist middle-class attitudes. It mocks suburban tract housing as "little boxes" of different colours "all made out of ticky-tacky", and which "all look just the same." "Ticky-tacky" is a reference to the shoddy material used in the construction of the houses.

3)     Pallet by The Stray Birds

Hailing from south eastern Pennsylvania, The Stray Birds have crafted an original sound that draws upon the richness of American folk music traditions. Talented multi-instrumentalists who perform with captivating musicality, the signature power of their sound lies in outstanding songwriting that soars in three-part harmony.

4)     Lifted by The Lighthouse Family

Lifted is a song written by British duo Lighthouse Family, for their debut album Ocean Drive (1996) and produced by Mike Peden. It was released as the lead single on May 1995 and reached the top 70 in the United Kingdom. It was later re-released on February 1996 and reached the top 10 in the United Kingdom. In 1999, Lifted was again re-released but with a different single cover.

5)     Warehouse by Dave Matthews Band

Dave Matthews Band (often abbreviated to DMB) is an American rock band that was formed in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991.Their most recent album, Away from the World, released in 2012, debuted at number one on the Billboard chart, making them the only group to have six consecutive studio albums debut in the top spot.

Does Your Pallet Racking Stack Up To The Likes of Kilimanjaro?

Are you jetting off on holiday this summer? Perhaps you’ll be dipping your toes in the warm waters of a beautiful white sandy beach, or watching the world whizz by in a fast paced city break. You may even be venturingThink about pallet racking when climbing Mount Fuji further and taking on the extreme; hiking, abseiling, mountaineering?

If the latter is the case, we applaud you. Here at Bristol Storage we certainly couldn’t live up to the challenge of a 400ft abseil or a 5,000ft ascent up the side of a rocky mountain. In fact, when we began considering it our minds drifted off, not to the harsh conditions and extreme durability you’d need to climb Kilimanjaro or Mount Fuji, but to the question of “how many racking units would it take to reach the summit”?

Remind Me, What is Pallet Racking?

You could say that pallet racking is a fundamental component to the smooth running operation of your warehouse or retail space. Enabling a company to organise storage space efficiently pallet racking can have a hugely positive impact on the organisation and productivity of your business.

As we have mentioned previously pallet racking is to a warehouse what a skeleton is to a body; essential structural support. These upright steel frames, which are connected by horizontal beams where pallets rest, are supplied by Bristol Storage in a range of designs such as:

  • Adjustable pallet racking
  • Drive in racking
  • Narrow aisle racking
  • Mobile pallet racking
  • Live storage racking

Naturally you will want to squeeze as many pallets as possible into the available space to ensure maximum efficiency but there are so limitations as far as pallet racking height limits go. However on average you should expect to find a typical height of 20 to 25 feet of high rise storage systems.

Be Prepared Before Attempting Scafell Pike

Scafell Pike is located in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria and is climbed by thousands every year. Reaching an elevation of 978m it is the highest mountain in England. If we take an average storage height of 25 feet, that’s the equivalent of 128 pallet racking units.

As with any extreme sport the key to a successful event is in the planning and without the right equipment your journey can be an eventful task. When ascending these heights you’ll have assured that you have acquired walking poles, compasses, warm clothing, and first aid kits to name but a few in the hopes that your journey will run smoothly.

And this preparation is in a sense no different to the ease of accessibility pallet racking brings to a warehouse. With the right equipment in play, whether pallet racking or walking poles, you’ll be more productive and experience a quicker turn around.

Consider Mountaineering Ethics before Climbing Mount Fuji

Before taking on the challenge of the likes of Mount Fuji there are more than a few considerations at play, such as the local environment. Mount Fuji is located on Honshu Island and is the highest mountain in Japan standing at an elevation of 3,776m. Approximately 100 kilometres south-west of Tokyo lies an active stratovolcano which last erupted in 1707.

Therefore knowing how to climb a mountain isn’t just about the physical and mental aspects but the surrounding dangers and impact you might have on the local environment. It is a privilege to be able to climb pristine mountains so you should adopt a number of practices to ensure their safe keeping;

  • Learn to leave no traces
  • Tread softly & obtain any necessary permits
  • Read climbing codes (which are developed for safety purposes and is essential reading)

Similar principles should be followed when installing and using pallet racking in a warehouse or retail space. As qualified members of the SEMA distributor group, where our installation teams are SEIRS registered, all work that is carried out runs in accordance with the SEMA Codes of Practice.

As an employer it is your responsibility to ensure that all members of staff are aware of the potential dangers surrounding the use and operation of pallet racking, how they can deal with this appropriately and what to do in the instance of a fire hazard for example.

Can you take a guess at how many average pallet racking units it would take to reach the summit? According to our maths you’ll need 495.

Self-Evaluate Before Ascending Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcanic mountain in Tanzania. With its three volcanic cones, named Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira the mountain stands at a total elevation of 5,895m. That’s a whopping total of 773 average height (25ft) pallet racking units.

Before attempting a climb as challenging as Kilimanjaro you would need to seriously consider self-evaluating by taking a good look at yourself before you go and asking whether you can really handle it. Are your physical skills up to scratch; are you physically prepared for this hike? What about your outdoor skills? Do you know enough about survival, how to build a fire, use a compass, filter water, or tend to an emergency?

These hard hitting questions are often the deciding factor in any individual’s decision when taking on board extreme challenges. And just as you would ask yourself if you’re tough enough, strong enough, or resilient enough to take on such a task you will need to ask the same of your pallet racking.

Whilst durable, the importance of keeping your pallet racking up to scratch is the difference between the assured safety of your inventory and more importantly staff and employees, and potential disaster. Additionally regular inspection of your pallet racking will help reduce insurance premiums and maintenance costs.

At Bristol Storage we recommend an Annual Pallet Racking Health Check to ensure your systems reach the current health and safety regulations and are therefore fit enough to continue providing solutions to your business.

Breath Taking Beauty of Mount Everest

Standing at a considerable height of 8,848m above sea level, Mount Everest is Earth’s highest mountain. Located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas this really is a sight of outstanding natural beauty. Whilst we’d like to compare this to our pallet racking we feel it’s a bit tenuous suggesting that they’re a sight to behold! Instead we’ll leave you with our final comparison; how many racking units to reach the summit of Mount Everest? A staggering 1,161!

Garden Retreats No Dad Should Do Without This Father’s Day

It’s that time of year again. Yes Father’s Day is upon us and we’re sure, just like us, you’re all frantically looking for something to purchase that isn’t just another bar of chocolate and sTreat you dad this Father's Dayet of ‘dad socks’. But we know we’ll end up wrapping a present almost identical to the one we acquired last year.

Fortunately dads are usually quite content with these gifts and will probably retreat to their ‘man cave’ or garden shed. What they do there we don’t really know, we can only assume they’re building away on their workbenches or watching the latest match. This week Bristol Storage have explored the online world for sheds, from basic gardening hubs to the more extravagant and creative garden retreats. Take a look for yourselves below:

What is a Dad Shed?

A man and his shed is a combination as familiar as ‘fish and chips’. And a dad shed is simply a space used to escape from the noise, partake in various activities and generally relax. Whether it is a space where they house their tools or watch their favourite sport there’s one important thing to remember; it’s dad’s refuge.

In fact, one might say what you can achieve in a shed is practically limitless. Literary geniuses such as Roald Dahl have used a shed as his sanctuary to write without interruption. And, did you know that William Harley and Arthur Davidson built their first iconic motorbike in a shed in Milwaukee over 100 years ago.

From Basic to Extravagant

Sheds appear to have become an extension of the home and are no longer just a base of operations for gardening. Dad’s across the country are turning their basic garden sheds into exaggerated works of art with what appears to be a mutual desire for the ultimate ‘man cave’.

Run of the Mill Garden Shed

Found at the bottom of most gardens, this simple yet effective space is ideal for any dad armed with his gardening kit and tool box.

Take a look at this one we found at Countrywide which is ideal for all your gardening needs.

The Ultimate Sanctuary

Having spent £15,000 on his garden shed, Jez Walter has spent 6 years converting this 18ft by 16ft space into his own leisure pad.

This high tech hut is his own personal pub complete with touch-screen jukeboxes, surround sound home cinema, and pool table to name but a few of its features. You can take a look at the ultimate snactuary shed here

The Pub Shed

This simple concept is quite something; a bottom of the garden private bar.

It really couldn’t be easier to achieve either. Just find yourself a ‘run of the mill garden shed’, source some bar stools, a few authentic, and obligatory, bar signs and of course a selection of your favourite beers.

Take a look at this excellent conversion we found over at Buzzfeed who have also produced a How To Make Your Own Garden Pub guide.

A Garden Workshop

This vintage inspired workshop lingers at the bottom of a garden in Hereford and has been named a finalist in this year’s Shed of the Year awards!

Take a look at the 1930s style garage shed, with its own restoration workshop, which is home to several classic cars with plenty of space.

You can take a look at the full list of finalists over at Cuprinol, the competitions sponsor, where you’ll find some rather extravagant stuff.

A Feasible Alternative

Despite the rise in obscure sheds, the majority of dad’s have a basic, four walled shed at the bottom of the garden filled with a range of tools or gardening equipment, and if they’re lucky enough a mini fridge filled with workbenchtheir favourite beverage.

And we bet that there is very little organisation in this space and it is often the case that you’ll hear him banging in search of a hammer and clear work surface. So in our eyes what you dad really needs this Father’s Day, other than another pair of socks of course, is a heavy duty workbench, some form of shelving, and a few storage bins.

Whatever your dad uses his space for he deserves to retreat there if he so wishes this Sunday for a bit of peace and quiet.

Pallet Racking

Pallet racking is a great solution for small warehouses and overcoming the pitfalls of your currently unorganised system. These reliable and durable systems utilise the available space in your warehouse ensuring that you can store away high density, and high volume bulk inventory.

Why wouldn’t you want to be able to access your storage easily and conveniently? Besides, it makes economic sense to make use of every space in your warehouse, doesn’t it? And in doing so you can continue to encourage improved safety measure as employees and your inventory itself isn’t jeopardised by poorly stored items.

Mezzanine Flooring

Rather than the extortionate costs of extensions of even company relocation you could maximise the use of your current warehouse with mezzanine flooring. The additional space works great in offices, retail, and production space where you can make better use of redundant space.

With a range of shelving options available at Bristol Storage you can organise your offices, warehouses and even homes with a variety of products. These clever storing solutions, which are simple yet effective, come in a range of designs specific for industrial use, stock rooms, mobile options and even you home garages.

Steel Partitions

Do you want to redesign the layout of your workplace, either temporarily or for the long term future? Steel Partitions are an ideal choice when you need to create designated areas within your current workplace. Whether that may be offices within factories and warehouses, clean room environments or high security cages and private work areas, Bristol Storage will provide a full site survey, design, and installation service.

5 Of The Best Racking & Shelving Teams From The Emerald Island

Despite being an Irish holiday, St Patrick’s day is celebrated the world over and like thousands of others it’s one of our favourite days of the year.

Check out some great manufacturers on the Emerald Isle

Whilst traditionally a day to remember the death of the most commonly recognised patron Saint of Ireland – Saint Patrick – the world recognise and observe the day as a celebration of Irish Culture. Other than parades and celebrations taking place across Ireland, on 17th March you’ll find the lights of the Sydney Opera House turn green, The Chicago River is dyed a brilliant shade of the same colour and a Irish festival takes place in our capital London.

Despite routes as a religious festival, both Christians and non-Christians alike celebrate the secular version of the holiday by wearing green or orange, eating Irish food, and guzzling Irish drinks (usually Guinness). So in light of this impending celebration, where we fully expect you to be decked out in shamrocks and green accessories, Bristol Storage are pointing you in the direction of some excellent Pallet Racking suppliers on the Emerald Isle.
